With the publication of the PPWR, the topic of PFAS has suddenly become very topical again. The new regulation stipulates that PFAS may not be present in food packaging in quantities above certain limits. This is a completely new approach. Until now, the deliberate use of chemicals in food packaging has usually been regulated. With regard to bisphenol A, the Commission has now clarified that the mere presence of bisphenol A in recycled materials, for example, is not prohibited! For PFAS, this is now being regulated differently for the first time, raising many practical questions.
- First of all, what exactly are PFAS?
- Why are they so popular, and not just in packaging?
- A little analysis is also necessary to understand the difference between individual substances and TOF.
- Which packaging materials pose a higher risk and which pose a lower risk – how can the risk be classified?
- What are the pitfalls that could potentially lead to false positive results?
